Journal Entry #4: Relationship with Writing

This course helped me explore many different platforms of writing and communicating which changed my relationship with writing and evolve my theory of writing. Although I still take a long time to write and am bad at writing, my horizon on writing has expanded and it helped progress finding my own writing style and writing process. It has changed my views on what I was previously taught. It showed me how it is not the only way to write and sometimes not the best way to write. For example, writing this reflection I chose to do journal entries instead of a traditional essay. I did this to drift from the traditional norm and formal tone used in essays. Instead, I used journal entries to establish a casual tone of voice allowing my writing to be more flexible. Also, it was easier to outline which allowed more free writing, unlike essays. However, I will admit I found comfort in the unwavering process and undeniable results of traditional writing as it has guided me through many papers. It set guidelines and rules for me which I blindly followed. It became my theory of writing and created good and bad habits. For one, it relieved me of the duty of knowing what to and not to do. Having found comfort in being told what to do, left me astray when told to write with no guidelines and to grade oneself. As a result, I became more independent when writing which improved my writing process and increased my usage of different writing styles and processes. However, although this helped me explore myself as a writer and help me write easier, I still am very bad at it and prefer not to write unless necessary, which was my original stance on writing.
